Senior Citizens Association
The Senior Citizens Association at St. Theresa’s, now called the Theresian Diamonds, was founded in January 2010 by Fr. Salvadore Serrao, who served as its first Spiritual Director. The Association was initially led by Cajetan Miranda; more recently Noeline D’Costa has served as president from 2010-2014.
The aim of the association is to put a ‘twinkle in the wrinkle’ of our seniors by adding ‘life to their years’ rather than years to life.
So began the fun times with regular and themed get-togethers. These include the Mumbai Darshan (a sight-seeing trip on Republic Day to see Mumbai lit up), the Harvest Festival (the offering of newly harvested grain at Mass, followed by lunch), an Easter Parade (featuring a traditional ‘hat’ contest), and Valentine’s Fun Day, to name a few, with fun, games, singing, dancing and prizes galore at each event.
The members’ spiritual and emotional needs are also addressed through regular Eucharistic celebrations, talks on “Aging Gracefully” by the Dignity Foundation and Clara D’Souza of the Bombay Archdiocese Senior Citizens Association (BASCA), Neighbourhood Visits, and more recently a class on computer and mobile literacy so as to keep up with the changing times.
A regular Housie session on the first Monday of each month at 5:30pm, conducted rain or shine, gives seniors something to look forward to each month. A Senior Citizens choir also sings at the regular Monday evening Mass each week. The association organised a carrom-and-cards summer games on the church lawns during the summer of 2013.
All parish seniors are welcome to join. The annual membership fee is Rs.50 with a one-time registration fee of Rs.20. There is no annual fee for anyone over 85 years of age. The group held a raffle recently to collect funds for the Association.
The Managing Committee, guided by Fr. Bernard Rodrigues, Spiritual Director, meets on the last Monday of each month at 5:30pm in the Council Room. For further information, please contact the parish office at tel. 2640-7891.
